story telling program-may 2011

From the month of May, we are glad to introduce a new program for our kids. Storytelling every Tuesday or Thursday  afternoon at Samiksha. We now have a resource person who is a qualified storyteller and will lead the program for the kids at Samiksha. We are very happy to make this announcement. This is something we have been doing in  a small way for our children, all these years. With the help of our new resource persons, we will be able to take this Storytelling program to new heights.

Thank you for your support!

Tejas Kumar

ON 12th april this year we received a call from Meenakshi -Tejas’s mother from her home. She wanted to enquire about us and update us on the progress that Tejas had made at school after being discharged from hospital. He had been at hospital for over a year undergoing treatment for cancer. Then he was in first standard. He missed his entire school year of 2nd grade and attended Samiksha whenever he could, during this time. His mother was a most encouraging  ward mom, always helpful, always smiling and hopeful for the kids..Unlike many mothers there, Meenakshi was a well travelled, educated and talented woman-she had left behind 2 older sons at home to be with little Tejas at the hospital. She bubbled with joy when she called me to say that Tejas had been doing very well at home and at school He got 79% in his 3rd standard exam even though he had missed the whole year there. Thanks to the people at  Samiksha, he was able to get back to school and normal life with pride and joy. Whenever he is upset with his routine in regular life, he tells his mom that he wishes he were back at the Samiksha school at the hospital where he was happy and had so much fun. Thank you Meenakshi for acknowledging our work. Good luck Tejas Kumar. We all wish you well and a great school year ahead.

We hope you do not have to come back to our school ever again! Cheers to your new life!

There are many such success stories we cud share but for sake of privacy of the kids, we will not be putting them all up on our website.

Creative Projects in 2011

Since January 2011, we have been doing many creative projects with the children at Samiksha. Ms. Bina, an architect, conducted pottery workshops, where they made animals, pots and other figures with clay. Students from Mallya Aditi International School, under the supervision of their teacher Ms. Jhanavi Mohan, have been regularly conducting origami and other craft-related activities.

Ms. Aparna Rao, an 11th grader, has been independently doing papercraft activities with the children as well, as well as raising funds. Photos of her work can be found in this gallery album.

11th graders from Indus International School volunteered during their spring break to paint the wall built in the play area. It took a good 14 hours of hard work – designing, planning, priming the wall and actually painting the design. The progress of the work and the end result can been seen in this album.

Thank you all for your contribution and beautiful work. We hope that you will continue to be part of the Foundation.

15th march-a doctor’s Birthday

This is a special day at the Kapoor Ward. The Head of Pediatrics, Dr. Appaji, has his Birthday today.. The children are excited, so are the parents! When we were there, everyone was planning a birthday for their favorite Doctor, also their mentor and friend. Children collected Rs.20 each and got together to  order a huge cake for him (even though none of them can actually eat cake on their own birthdays!) At the class they planned beautiful cards for him with drawings and poems written by them. The team at Samiksha made  a special card for Dr.Appaji with wishes written in many languages.

It was a big treat for all. Most of all an endearing and spontaneous thanksgiving by the children to a doctor. Images will be posted on the gallery.

The party on International Women’s Day

This International Women’s Day will be celebrated by us in a very special way. It won’t be about individual women and their achievements et all.. We, at Samiksha Foundation will be celebrating the contributions of a small group of highly focused and dedicated women The ANNS rotary women’s group- led by Nandita Sanghani , Asha Patil of Koramangala. They have been following the work done by us at Samiksha- Kapoor Ward, and are now sponsoring  the biggest Birthday Party ever for our kids there. We have 18 children celebrating their birthdays this March ( Feb and March ) .. There will be entertainment and gifts distributed to ALL the 110 children. 52 in the ward and about 35 in the Dharamashala ( kids awaiting treatment) and rest in other critical care wards at the Hospital. We would like to add that this was a hugely successful event with full participation of our volunteers and the ANNS group. Lots of laughter and lots of smiles were witnessed. Charumathi visits the children

Here’s a small note on my first visit to Samiksha…

I was struck by the cheerful and positive atmosphere in the Kapoor ward of Kidwai Hospital, the morning that I visited. There was no reflection of discomfort or ill-health in the children’s eager, smiling faces. Their absorption with school work and reading seemed total. One of the girls in the ward was being medicated through an intravenous drip. She was sitting and reading, heedless of the drip.

I could see that Samiksha Foundation is fulfilling more than a felt need in the children’s ward of the hospital. It is a dream for children to be surrounded by books, stories and people to assist their learning needs, even in the hospital environment. The learning activities must surely be having a healing effect on the psyche of the children being treated there.

I am glad I dropped by to visit the Kapoor ward. I wish Samiksha Foundation’s work more strength and good cheer!

year 2011

As we ring in the year 2011, we would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to all those who showed interest and pooled in their time and resources  to support our work at the foundation. We had some interesting visitors last year from october to December 2010. Among them were volunteers from Oracle, IBM, Christ university, residents from Brigade Millenium – JP Nagar, residents from Prestige Acropolis at Diary Circle, students from the international schools of Inventure Academy, Indus International School. Families contributed to infrastructure projects that we had undertaken ( who prefer to remain anonymous). Everyone of them have made significant contributions to the cause and we are grateful to all of them. Among our team i wish to personally applaud the work of  Manjari Bhatnagar, Tania Khosla, Meera Srivatsan, Padma Vishwanathan, Aditya, and our dedicated teachers Vidyavathy and Parvathi. Among the young volunteers, special thanks is due to Rohan Desai and Akash who worked with the children whenever they could.

We look forward to completion of some new projects that we had undertaken at the foundation specially for the comfort of the children admitted in the wards.

A happy new year to all at Samiksha Foundation and their resource people!

Lets work toward growing and  reaching out  to a greater number of affected children this next year.

Nov 20th Library Upgrade

We had another fun day at the childrens ward on Nov.20th. 6 volunteers from IBM ( from a single team) visited us. They had gotten together and contributed toward upgrading our library facilities at Kapoor ward. They have also supplied us with enormous amount of stationery that will keep our classes going for the next few months.

We now have some very valuable and age appropriate books added to our library and the teachers and kids are thrilled.

We are grateful to Taruna, Rupak Das, Mani, Satish and all others in the team  ( I wish i remembered all their names) for the collective work and the valuable time spent with us at the ward. We hope you will visit us again.

Cheers!

Cleanathon Drive at Kidwai Memorial – Oct 2010

23rd Oct 2010.

A group of volunteers from Oracle lead by our very own Punith B, came in to the children’s ward area at 8.30 am and started  a massive clean-a-thon drive. They were equipped with Mamutti, hats,  gloves, garbage bags, and a great attitude. Punith and his team helped the Samiksha Team clean up the environment around the Pediatric ward and the Dharamashala. After cleaning out the weeds and rubbish outside, they went on to do an awareness program on cleanliness to the children and their caregivers. This was done as an entertainment show with songs, mimicry and other question answer sessions in many languages.

This entire activity is the beginning of a huge project initiative by the foundation to renovate the Play area for the children in the oncology wards at KMIO. Following the presentations, as a token of good luck, each child was presented with a small potted plant that they were asked to care for in the coming weeks. This is said to be very therapeutic and joyful for them.

We did see a lot of very happy faces at the end of the day there! Pictures of this event are now on the gallery: go to http://picasaweb.google.com/happinessquotient/CleanathonAtKidwai23Oct2010

Thank you Punith and team!
